Mini-quiz F, "Battlefield version"

I have just set up a "battlefield" version of mini-quiz F for next week's module F. It is meant to simulate "battlefield conditions" of a regular midterm exam:

  1. Fast pace: avg. one minute per question
  2. one question at a time

Use the regular mini-quiz F for leisurely studying. Use the battlefield version for testing your computer and ISP, to make sure that everything works well. Please be super paranoid about this: If it loads slowly, find another computer or internet service that runs fast and smooth.

Friday due dates for mini-quizzes

You may have noticed that the due dates for mini-quizzes are always Friday. But because it is summer, no final exam period, the three exams this summer are also on Fridays, every two Fridays, starting July 5.

My ordinary procedure is to open the exam availability at 10:05 AM, before which I always deactivate the mini-quizzes.

That being the case, the mini-quizzes are due at different times:

  1. on 1st, 3rd and 5th weeks of Summer B, mini-quizzes are due at 5 PM, Friday, but
  2. on exam weeks, 2nd, 4th and 6th weeks, the mini-quizzes must be due at 9 AM and must go off the air at 9:30 AM.
By the way, the 4 points you receive for doing your mini-quiz and getting at least one question correct, is my way of encouraging students to keep and even pace of studying a little bit each week.

Welcome to spring semester online section of PSC1121

When Webcourses opens on Monday, you'll have a small intro module to work during this first week, whilst everyone is dropping, adding and swapping. So until Saturday, here are the things to work on:
  1. Obtain the textbook, of course.
  2. Skim and look over the photos and diagrams or chapter 24 of the textbook.
  3. Work on the Oceans 1 mini-quiz.
  4. Familiarize yourself with the syllabus.
  5. Take a look at the extra readings about the Floridan aquifer.
  6. Get the exam schedule cleared at your place of employment. The exam schedule is in the syllabus.
  7. See if you can in any way rearrange your schedule so as to swap over to my lecture section, PSC1121-0003, which meets MWF at 10:30 - 11:20 AM in BA119. There are still a few seats, and you will find it way easier to earn a good grade in the lecture section.
Welcome aboard!

Mini-quiz for E2 is up.

Your mini-quiz for learning module E2 is up. Give it a go!

Believe it or not, the electronic binding configuration of molecules like DNA is controlled by wave properties from E2.

Concept guide E

There is a new concept guide for diving into the waves and oscillation concepts of chapter 5. It is a mini-concept guide in that it introduces you to wave concepts but leaves out several parts of chapter 5. Those other parts will be covered after exam 2!

There is also a new Discussions area and a short mini-quiz with a few regular questions and a few brain burners.

Your mini-quiz for Ch. 4 heat concepts is now available. Look in the weekly learning modules folder.

Mini-quiz C is ready.

You can get working on Chapter 3 now, using mini-quiz C for a combo study guide/quiz.

I will be posting the accompanying Concept Guide C hopefully by lunchtime, maybe later this afternoon.

Mini-quiz B is ready!

There is an extra study component in mini-quiz B... a deluxe example about eggs and how to avoid breaking them. Look in Learning module for week 3.

Thursday, September 1, 2011

Mini-quiz A is ready.

You can now go into this week's learning module and work on Mini-quiz A. It will help you get some more practice with concepts and calculations in concept guide A.

If you get stumped or need clarification, post a question in Discussions, and the TAs and I can help you sort things out.

Typo #1.1

Our mini-quiz, "Oceans 1," had a typo in question 1, as a few students have mentioned. I have now corrected it in Webcourses, and the Webcourses server has re-graded that question properly. I apologize for the error -- we are using new software for test bank integration, and that error slipped by me.

June 7 office hour

We reviewed several items from homework and mini-quizzes. You can view the recording by looking in the Adobe Connect folder on our Webcourses home page.

Good night.

Mini-quizzes go off the air at 11:30 AM.

Don't forget to view and try the mini-quizzes, because they always go off the air at 11:30 AM on exam days. Do not be caught napping by last minute study! After 11:30 AM, you will be on your own.

Learning module for chapter 2

You can now try the outline in the Chapter 2 concept guide. It has concepts, vocabulary, homework exercises to try and various comments. We will be pacing two or three chapters per week. With the chapter 2 mini-quiz, it makes up a bundle known as the Ch. 2 Learning Module.

More later on. Stay tuned.

Where to start today

For early birds wanting to get going fast, try reading through chapter 2 of the textbook and as you go, try the Ch. 2 mini-quiz. It is a study tool for reading and will be converted to points on your semester grade. SO get a first look at it -- you will have unlimited number of attempts.

One more learning module

Your last learning module for Exam 3, Ch. 21, is now up in Webcourses.

Also: the chapter 20 mini-quiz is now ON. It was still set for last semester's dates! But now I have reset the dates, so you can dip in there and study with it now.

Mini-quiz for chapter 15, waves

Chapter 15 on waves is a mini-chapter. There is a mini-quiz associated with it, in the Week 7 learning module. I just activated this mini-quiz. It's very basic -- taking you over the basics of waves and oscillations: wavelength, amplitude, frequency, speed etc.

Get on it!

I looked over the mini-quiz performance pages, and I see that 33 of you have not attempted the chapter 2 mini-quiz. That was for the first week of classes!

And only one person has attempted the chapter 3 mini-quiz. That was for last week!

You all had better get on it, get your you-know-what moving with your studies, or Exam 1 will be upon you and you will be flailing like a nasty phone call from a know-it-all mother-in-law.

A bit of work to do this week.

I just activate the Week 1 Learning Module in Webcourses, with a concept guide for chapter 2 that you can use to direct your study. There is also a mini-quiz to tackle, but you should also try the questions and exercises mentioned in the concept guide.

We will have a concept guide for each chapter, and they should form the nucleus of your study activity. There are tons of ways to study, but they should all orient to the concept guide.

Ch. 24 mini-quiz is ready.

You now have the Ch. 24 mini-quiz ready to go. Look in the Week 6 learning module and see if Dr. de Broglie's waves can make sense to you!

Ch. 21 mini-quiz is UP.

I just cleaned up the Ch. 21 mini-quiz and it is up and ready for your study activity.
