Bonus points opportunity

Bonus point opportunity:
Post a question in Discussions, that you create, based on you notes, readings or other materials.

Here are the rules

  1. Create a multiple choice question with four or five options.
  2. Indicate the correct option with an * asterisk.
  3. In the Subject box, type in a short phrase that decries your question.
  4. Below your question's options, skip a few lines and type in the date of lecture or page in the textbook where another student can study up on the correct concept.
  5. Dr. B and our TA Chloee' Hanks comment or maybe ask you to revise the question.
  6. If your question is good enough to use on Exam 2, you will earn one bonus point.

The bonus questions can make a nifty study guide, too.

Bonus points work

For those of you who want to earn some bonus pointage, you can work through the Chemical Bondling Learning Module H. It is meant as a synthesis study set, putting together a lot of other concepts from the semester, but I will also offer a 10 point bonus section on the final exam, based on this mini-chapter. So you could make 110/100 on the final exam this Saturday.

Your exam 3 scores from yesterday are now viewable in Webcourses.

Also, a few of you earned bonus points by creating an acceptable question for the exam. Those bonus points are up, too.

Concept guide G, on the periodic table, is forthcoming.

Bonus points opportunity

I just activated the bonus points question area in Discussions, for Exam 2.

Your task: Create a new multiple choice question based on reading or podcast for exam 2.
  1. Multiple choice format
  2. Indicate the correct option with an * asterisk
  3. At the bottom of the question, skip a few lines down and then type in where in the textbook, e.g., page number, another student can read up on the concept or calculation.
  4. Subject: heading should be a short phrase describing the concept
  5. Be creative!
Take a look at the example question I have set up.

The TAs and I will comment on your question, maybe make a suggestion or so. If we use your question on Exam 2, then

  1. you will earn one bonus point,
  2. you will already know the answer to one of the questions on the exam, and
  3. so will anyone else who studies this discussion thread!
So get organized and post up a good question, try to earn a bonus point. They come in REALLY handy at the end of the semester!

Bonus point opportunity

You can create another question for a midterm exam now. Look in Discussions for "Create another exam question, for Exam 2 (bonus opportunity)."

On Exam 1, five students earned this bonus point. Excellent! If I use your question for Exam 2, you will earn 1 bonus point, too, which is 1/2 percent on your semester grade scale. Handy.

Bonus point: create a good question for Exam 1.

There is a bonus point opportunity now in Webcourses, the Discussions area "Create a question for Exam 1 (bonus)," in which you can try for a bonus point.

You'll create a multiple choice concepts question for Exam 1, from chapter 2, 3, 4 or 5 concepts. Instructions are in the discussion area, and I started the discussion with an example question. If it is good enough to use on the exam, then you'll get 1 bonus point right after the exam PLUS you will know the answer for at least one of the exam items beforehand. So will anyone who studies your question in Discussions.

Nice.

So get in there and see if you can post something excellent before midnight tonight.

Bonus points; My Grades weirdness.

On a final exam, I usually set up maybe 4 or 5 bonus point opportunities. Therefore, since I could not squeeze in some Ch. 24 exam questions etc. on the final, I converted your Chapter 24 mini-quiz work into bonus points, 1, 2, 3 or 4 bonus points based on your average for the 4 attempts. The bonus points appear in "Bonus activity X" row of your My Grades page.

And Webcourses just burped on me again. >:|

UNbelievable! Well, the bonus data are in there. Also, your final exam score is released now.

I will be working on grades for the next two days or so. For this reason, you might see a bonus point file disappear and reappear suddenly, a midterm change position or some similar weirdness on your My Grades page. Do not stress out -- iit is just a sign of me arranging and rearraging data in the klunky Webcourses grade book!

Final Exam Week Bonus Learning Module

Tomorrow begins exam week. Therefore I am releasing a learning module featuring Ch. 24 concepts that will lead to bonus point question on the final exam this coming Saturday.

By the way, you have only 4 attempts on this mini-quiz, so make them count!

Suggest question for Exam 2, for bonus pointage.

You can earn a bonus point by contributing a question for Exam 2. If it is good enough for me to use on the exam, you will earn one bonus point. Nice.

Go to the "Suggest question for Exam 2" discussion area in Webcourses.

Semester pointage is UP.

You can take a look at the "Total semester points" row of your My Grades page in Webcourses. It now includes all the exam points, including yesterday's final exam, plus all the bonus points you may have earned.

Side note on bonus points:
  1. The Ch. 24 bonus came about through the average score of your Ch. 24 mini-quiz attempts.
    1. One bonus point if your avg. was 6.50 or higher;
    2. Two bonus points if your avg. was larger than 12.50
  2. There are some bonus points embedded in your final exam score, which is why Webcourses considers it an 88 point exam. To see if you earned the bonus points here, just select the final exam's "View Submission" method from the Assessments page and view your attempt -- specifically, items 69-72. These bonus points are embedded in your final exam score and come into the "Total semester points" through the "Exams subtotal" row.

Later this week, after giving final exams to my lecture sections, I will start posting your semester grades. But for right now you can get a good idea from your "Total semester points" figure.

Create questions for the final exam.

The Discussions area for creating final exam questions is now open. You can earn two bonus points if your question is good enough to use on the final.

Bonus learning module

If you want to shoot for some bonus points, try the bonus learning module for this week, covering a few of the concepts in chapter 24 on the wave theory of the electron. It opens at 8:30 AM today, will close at 12:30 PM on Saturday.

Read carefully!

ALSO: there is a new mini-podcast on electrons and protons, in the iTunes U area.

Bonus points opportunity

The bonus question discussion area is now open in Webcourses. If you create a good enough question, so good that I include it in Exam 3, then you'll earn a bonus point on the exam.... plus YOU will know the answer to at least one question ahead of time!

GO FOR IT!!

Bonus questions, Exam 4

You can now propose bonus questions for Exam 4, in Discussions.

By the way, I chose two questions for Exam 3, but I forgot to type them into the test! By way of making amends, I will use them on the final exam as BONUS questions. Nice.

Suggest question for Exam 3 (bonus)

The "Suggest question for Exam 3 (bonus)" discussion is open in Webcourses. You can earn a bonus point, one half of a percentage on your semester grade, IF it is good enough to use on Exam 3.

By the way: I did not use any of your suggested questions on Exam 2. Lots of good ones, a few I had to reject outright. However, I did like one of the questions a LOT, but it is better for a final exam than for a midterm. SO...... One of these questions will be on the final exam. And that student will get the bonus point after the final exam on Aug. 6.

Now open, "Suggest question for Exam 2 (bonus)" discussion

You can now create questions for Exam 2, in the "Suggest question for Exam 2 (bonus)" discussion area in Webcourses.

Love those bonus points. Two students nabbed one for Exam 1. Nice.
